James took 2nd place today in two races, freestyle and backstroke. He was so excited and so proud of himself. In the second race he almost had first place. He was in first the whole race and literally lost by a half of a second. After a week of high temps and no practices he did not want to swim at all. We even had a break down and he would not get in the pool for warm ups. After taking 4th and 5th at the meet last week, he was very discouraged and no longer wanted to do swim team. His last race of the evening, he got DQ'd (otherwise would of been 3rd) for the butterfly because he did not touch the wall with both hands, which I think (even before it happened to him) is ridiculous to ask of 5 and 6 years olds. I have seem so many kids struggle - including James - with just doing the race in front of so many people (I'm talking 300)!!! They should not be disqualifying the younger ones for not touching the wall with both hands - this isn't the Olympics...
Anyway, we are so proud of him!! He did great and although it doesn't matter what he places, and we have told him that, it is still a bonus when he does well! We went to a small restaurant afterward to celebrate with the team. We let him pick out an ice cream shake - cookies n cream was his choice.
Congratulations, James! I'm very proud of you!! I know you're going to be great and have so much fun. Keep on swimming!
